I like to describe traveling with kids as life with kids, only amplified. Expect everything you experience during an ordinary day, only more so. The joy that you get from spending time with your kids can be heartbreakingly so, and the frustrations can make you want to pull every hair out of your head. I will assert, though, that it is worth it every single time.
A crappy day at home is just that. A crappy day on the road is something to be laughed about long after it’s over, even if you want to beat your entire family senseless at the time.
Kids will get sick, cars will break down in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and flights will be missed resulting in 27 hours at O’Hare airport, but the gems that shine brightly between those moments will continue to shine. Therein lies the value. You will not find those gems anywhere else.
So we pack up those kids and hit the road, discovering the gems and holding them close. They never go down in value.
